The Arnold Air Society of Detachment 685 took part in an amazing event this year known as Relay for Life. Fifteen Arnie’s signed up for the event as team Big Foot, representing Area XI’s mascot—the Sasquatch. The purpose of this event was to raise money for the American Cancer Society, have team members walk continuously throughout the night, and, of course, have fun! This event was held on 14 May 2010 on a beautiful, sunny Friday afternoon and went until the following morning.
There were eighty-three teams with approximately 1,150 participants. The total money raised was an astounding $80,000! Teams set up their campsites in the Memorial Union Quad at Oregon State University. Fun events were held throughout the night, including dance contests and multiple games of root beer pong. Some teams even brought big screen televisions, played XBOX, or watched movies all night long. During the event, Cadets from the Detachment came to Big Foot’s campsite to support those participating in the event and soak up the excitement with the team.
Team members took shifts sleeping throughout the event, while some stayed up for the entire fourteen hours the event was held! Overall, it was an interesting experience and a heartfelt time to remember those who battled cancer, and support those fighting it now.
