I.                APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes from January 23rd were approved.

REPORT FROM CURRICULUM COUNCIL CHAIR (N. Scott) – N. Scott announced that due to her upcoming retirement, she will no longer chair the Curriculum Council.  L. Friedman and C. Boyer will serve as co-chairs for the remainder of the academic year.  C. Boyer chaired the remainder of the meeting.

REPORT FROM ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (B. Burton) – B. Burton gave a brief report on budget issues affecting Academic Programs.

II.              OLD BUSINESS

Administrative change in College Student Services Administration (CSSA) – B. Burton distributed an email from Bruce Rettig, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, stating that the following motion had been passed by the Graduate Council:

"The Graduate Council approves the transfer of the CSSA program from the Graduate School to the School of Education."

Issues of financial support are still being discussed.

The Curriculum Council recognized that the move was essentially a "return" to the original home of the CSSA program.

Decision: The Curriculum Council approved the move of the CSSA program from the Graduate School to the School of Education.

III.            NEW BUSINESS

Abbreviated Category 1 proposal for the Rename of MS in Environmental Health Management to MS in Environmental Health and Occupational Safety Management – L. Friedman explained that this proposal was an effort toward "truth in advertising," and that expertise in the department was in the area of occupational safety and environmental health.  The Curriculum Council discussed whether the word "management" was necessary in the title, or if it should be added to the name of the option for consistency.

Decision: The Curriculum Council approved the proposal, with the suggestion to add the word "management" to the name of the Occupational Safety option for consistency.

Abbreviated Category 1 proposal for the Elimination of the MS in Health and Safety Administration – This degree program no longer serves a function due to broadening of the Public Health degree.  There are currently three students in the program, but there should be no problem with their completion of the degree.  L. Friedman will document communication with these students to verify that they are taken care of.

Decision: The Curriculum Council approved the proposal.

Style issues for OSU Catalog – B. Burton distributed copies of communications with the Animal Science department about a Category II proposal to change the name of the ANS191 course from "Beginning Ridership" to "Horsemanship."   B. Burton has not approved the proposal because he considers the term "horsemanship" to be non-inclusive, and requested a synonym be used which is more gender neutral.  The instructor in the Animal Science department strongly resisted the suggestion, and the department maintains that the term is common industry language.

B. Burton decided not to make an administrative decision on the issue, and instead to bring it to the Curriculum Council for discussion.  The Council discussed various issues, including whether certain synonyms such as "equitation" had English riding connotations, which may not fit the Western riding style taught in the class.  There was also discussion about choosing a name which accurately reflected the curricular content of the course, including whether the course covered both riding and equine management instruction.  The Council expressed interest in how female faculty and students in the department respond to the term "horsemanship," as well as how the term may come across to an external audience.

The Curriculum Council may want to consider policy on this matter in the future, but in the mean time, do not want the Animal Science department to feel singled out.  The Council expressed a preference for a gender neutral name for the course, and if that was not possible, felt that it was incumbent upon the department to show that there was no reasonable alternative.

Decision: No final decision was made by the Curriculum Council, but B. Burton received guidance on the issue.  The Council may choose to explore policy on use of inclusive language in the Catalog in the future.

NEXT MEETING: Thursday, February 27th, 1:15-3:00pm in the MU Board Room.
