Basin-wide Aquatic Habitat Surveys

The ODFW Aquatic Inventories Project is designed to collect information about aquatic habitat throughout Oregon.  This goal has resulted in a methodology that is flexible enough to capture the variability that is found throughout the state.

A basin-wide survey is conducted by a pair of surveyors, starting at a designated point along the river/stream and walking upstream to the designated ending point.  Start and end designations are based on contractual agency specifications.  There are two scales of data collected at the time of the survey.  Broad scale information that describes distinct stream reaches characterized by land use, topology, or vegetation are identified.  Within these reaches, habitat units such as pools, riffles and glides are documented.  Information that is collected includes substrate, gradient, channel exposure, woody debris, bank stability and riparian vegetation content.  For specific information about the survey methodology you may download the survey methods. We have inventoried over 10,000 km of stream habitat.
