Call for Abstracts

IIFET and Nha Trang University invite you to submit 250 word (maximum) abstracts for papers and/or posters for presentation at IIFET 2008 Vietnam. The deadline for submission of abstracts is January 20, 2008; acceptance decisions will be sent by February 20, 2008.

Vietnam Policy Day

The Vietnam Fishery Policy Day is proposed by Nha Trang University (Dr. Kim Anh Thi Nguyen & Prof. Ola Flaaten), the Vietnam Institute of Fisheries Economics and Planning VIFEP (Dr. Nguyen Chu Hoi & Prof. Kenneth Ruddle) and the NADAREP (Dr. Chu Tien Vinh) to discuss small- scale, nearshore fisheries management in Vietnam to achieve sustainable fisheries, reduce poverty and enhance livelihoods in coastal communities.

Posters

Poster sessions will be available for presenters to share their research at IIFET 2008 Vietnam. Presenters are strongly encouraged to seriously consider this format, which is very suitable for presentations aimed at sharing information and knowledge which is highly descriptive, presenting general trends in graphs, or describing a program, where the presentation does not contain a great deal of complex economic analysis. Presenters who are not comfortable communicating in English to a large group should also consider poster format. Both traditional paper-based, and electronic poster formats will be accepted.


Awards and Prizes

IIFET Best Student Paper Award
The IIFET Executive Committee is once again pleased to offer an award of $500 US to the author of the best student paper presented at IIFET 2008 Vietnam. Any student currently enrolled, within one year of graduation from a graduate program is eligible to apply.

NEW! OECD Policy Paper Prize
This newly developed prize supported by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be awarded to the paper that most successfully addresses a contemporary fisheries policy issue, based on strong economic analysis and providing sound advice to policymakers. Eligible papers may address issues in either OECD or non-OECD countries, and can cover any aspect of fisheries policy, including fisheries management, fisheries trade, aquaculture development, processing, marketing, community development, small scale fisheries, etc. The Review Committee will be looking for innovative and effective application of economic analysis to address a policy problem in the sector, coupled with clear policy messages emerging from the analysis.

CRSP Awards
This year, IIFET is offering three CRSP-supported prizes. A cash prize of $500 will be offered for the best student paper on an aquaculture topic related to the developing world. Students from developing countries are eligible to apply. Partial travel support not to exceed $2,000 and free conference registration will also be provided to the winner.

In addition, CRSP and IIFET offer two additional partial travel grants for aquaculture economics professionals (ie. not students). Up to $1800 each will be provided, plus free conference registration.

JIFRS Yamamoto Prizes
Any participant in an IIFET biennial conference from a developing country presenting a paper encouraging the rational development of responsible national fisheries in his or her own country is eligible to apply for a JIFRS Yamamoto Prize. Up to two prizes of $500 each will be offered; Dr. Tadashi Yamamoto will assist the winners of the JIFRS Yamamoto Prize with an additional US$ 1,000 each to partially cover travel costs. The payment will be made together with the JIFRS Yamamoto Prize at the IIFET conference in Vietnam.

Registration

Registration fees range from $300-$450 US, with special lower fees available for developing country participants, students and Vietnamese participants. The fee covers participation in all conference sessions, a welcome reception, the Conference banquet on 24 July 2008, all lunches, and Conference proceedings. Registration materials and detailed fee categories can be found on the conference website.


Tourism

Nha Trang is located on beautiful Nha Trang Bay, a wonderful place for a unique tourism experience. A wide variety and price range of hotels, from inexpensive to luxurious, are available; tourist infrastructure is good, and is developing rapidly. With an average temperature of 26.5oC (about 80oF) and an average 2,380 hours of sunshine a year, Nha Trang's beaches are warm year round, making it the perfect place for a holiday. The city's main beach, covered in fine, white sand forms a crescent around the sparking blue water of the bay. Its beaches and other attractions such as Ponogar Tower, Yen Island, and beautiful bays such as Van Phong and Cam Ranh, and many excellent sea-food restaurants, make this conference an ideal opportunity to combine professional and leisure travel.

There are a wide range of hotels available at the city center (just 3 km from the conference venue, transportation from and to the hotels are covered). Please refer to the conference website for your choice and booking of hotels. You are advised to book early as July is always a peak time for tourism in Nha Trang.

Guidelines for Applying for an Entry Visa to Vietnam
An entry visa to Vietnam is required of all visitors. You may apply for a tourist visa by mail or in person at the Embassy of Vietnam in your country of residence as early as six months prior to the date of travel. Call the Embassy of Vietnam in your country, or check their website for details. It is strongly recommended that you apply for your visa as early as possible, to avoid last-minute delays.
