The Determination and Use of Objective Preferences in a Given Fisheries Bioeconomic Modelling Framework
By Simon Mardle and Sean Pascoe
ABSTRACT
Fisheries management incorporates economic, biological and social objectives. Some of the most frequently cited objectives in the field of fisheries management are resource conservation, food production, economic wealth generation, employment and community sustainability. There are also a multitude of key interest groups, e.g. fishermen, policy makers, fisheries managers, industry groups and environmental groups. Therefore, the development of management models to assist in the analysis of strategies to support the management process are crucial. Furthermore, to consider the diversity of interest group focus, decision maker preferences amongst the objectives needs to be ascertained. This paper reviews and evaluates methods for the development of objective hierarchy and associated preferences in fisheries management, to be included in a bioeconomic modelling framework to assist the decision making process.
