Seafood Inspection and Quality Audits as a Way of Doing Business in International Seafood Trade
By Ted Evans
ABSTRACT
Few seafood businesses can survive without reaching to the far corners of the world for raw material. Inspection of raw material can assist traders in understanding the financial risks involved in a procurement. Quality standards differ throughout the world. Suitability for intended use can only be judged by the users. Inspection information must convey quality information in a clear, concise and uniform way. Surefish has attempted to create such a system and is expanding the service as industry needs are defined. With the advent of online seafood trading, standardized seafood inspection becomes even more important. With the goal of selling significant quantities of seafood by unknown sellers to unknown buyers, some means of instilling confidence of the quality attributes the traded product is essential.
Will the industry accept and utilize attempts to establish a common language of quality information to be utilized in trading. Will trading based on claims and returns be replaced by trading based on advance knowledge and product confidence? This is one fish inspector's perspective.
