The Oregon State of the Environment Report:
An Overview of the Motivation, Purpose, Process, and Findings
By Bill Boggess
ABSTRACT
The State of the Oregon Environment Report is the product of two years of effort by a panel of scientists to describe the health of Oregon's environment in terms of natural structure and function, and how the environment contributes to sustainable production of goods and services. The goal was to provide a comprehensive, integrated assessment of the current status and trends in the health of State's natural and environmental resources. The report developed a framework for assessing ecosystem health and identified indicators that the State can use to measure changes in ecosystem health. The next step is to identify targets for the various indicators and to design incentive-driven, performance-based policies for achieving the desired target levels of ecosystem health.
