What is Rangeland?
  • Rangeland is defined as:

    "Lands supporting natural vegetation cover of grasses, grasslike plants, forbs, or shrubs and managed as natural ecosystems".

    These lands include all natural grasslands, savannas, shrublands, deserts, tundras, marshes, and meadows.
  • How much rain falls on rangeland?
  • Rangelands typically occur in areas where the average precipitation is less than 30 inches - in fact, vast expanses of rangeland receive 15 inches or less.

  • How much of the United States are classified as rangeland?
  • A little over one-half of all U.S. lands are classified as rangelands! That is about 1.2 billion acres of rangeland!

  • About 60% of the entire world's landmass is classified as rangeland!
