Location: Circle Bar Ranch, Mitchell Oregon.
Job Description: In the summer of 2005 an adaptive weed management plan for medusahead rye was implemented on
the Circle Bar Ranch. The plan represents the state of the art management techniques on medusahead since 2005 to the
present. Since the plan is adaptive the applicant will be responsible for monitoring medusahead on the ranch through weed
surveys using a GPS (70%). The applicant will also be involved in making recommendations to the plan based on their
findings and then implementing the best technique of control, revegetation, and or prevention. It is preferred that the
applicant be familiar with GIS to create simple maps of the medusahead infestation (5%). Other duties include seeding
desirable species, and applying non restricted herbicides (20%). The applicant will work closely with the Eastern Oregon
Agriculture research center in Burns, Oregon to continue the refining process of the weed plan on the Circle Bar Ranch (5%).
This is a terrific opportunity for those interested in land management as the applicant will play a big role in the future
rangeland health and ecology of the ranch.
Requirements: Undergraduates or graduate students in range, soils, wildlife, botany, plant science, or other natural
resource fields. Applicants with some weed and plant knowledge are preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license, be able to
use a GPS and operate an ATV. Field work may necessitate working in adverse weather conditions and hiking in rugged and steep terrain. May need to lift objects
that weigh up to 50 pounds including a backpack. Applicant must be able to work alone and be a strong self starter in a remote environment.
Salary: $11.00-12.00/hr DOE.
Housing:
Housing is provided on the ranch. The ranch is located 10 miles from Mitchell, Oregon and 50 miles from Prineville, Oregon. This location is semi remote.
The ranch manager and hired hand live on site.
