OSU Home » Dean of Students » Parents Ask Us

The Office of the Dean of Student Life at Oregon State University serves as a primary link for parents. When requesting assistance from and/or making inquiry to our office by phone, fax, in person, or by e-mail, our response can be more effective if you provide us the correct spelling of your student's name (as it appears in Banner), your student's identification number, and the best phone number at which we can reach you.

Parents ask us:

What if my student has been absent from classes because of illness or a family emergency?

Your student may know the instructor's expectations via the course syllabus. If there is nothing express about attendance or missed exam or missed due dates your student should check with his/her instructors as soon as possible. (Most instructors accept email communication.) In serious situations or when the student is unable to contact instructors the student or family member may contact the the Office of the Dean of Student Life at 541-737-8748 for assistance. The Office can provide notification of the absence to the student's instructors and college head advisor.

What if I'm worried about my student?

A parent is the best early detection device. Express your concern to your student. If you have continuing concern feel free to contact the Office of the Dean of Student Life at 541-737-8748.

What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 (Public Law 93-380), as amended, Oregon Revised Statutes 351.065, and their implementing regulations, afford students certain rights with respect to their educational records and require Oregon State University to assure that those students' rights are not abridged. Student Record Privacy FERPA protects the privacy of all "education records" in any medium, maintained by Oregon State University. Although the law was written in 1974, its coverage is not limited to paper copies. All student education records, including records about students contained in computer databases, are protected. It is important to respect the privacy of students. Even though a record is not protected by FERPA, it does not mean that the record can be freely released. For example, other laws protect employment and medical records. Medical records used to accommodate a disability should be kept separately from a student's "education records."

All employees of OSU must comply with FERPA: OSU's Guidelines for the Release of Student Records.

Who provides Dean's List information to local and hometown newspapers?

OSU's News and Communications Services obtains Dean's List information from the Office of the Registrar every term and submits the information to local and hometown newspapers. It may take a couple of weeks after the end of each term for the information to be processed and submitted for publication.
