The OSU Events Calendar is completely open to the public.  The community-at-large is both invited and encouraged to take a look at the multitude of events that are occurring at OSU on any given day, as well as to participate in applicable events.

This level of widespread calendar use is known as the "Read-Only" level.  Users are not required to have or use an ONID username and password to view events on the OSU Events Calendar.  Users can read the calendar, but they can not submit any events to it.

Basic Interface
  Advanced Interface

The most notable item on the screen, whether using the Basic or Advanced Interface is the list of items that appears slightly off-center on the screen. This is called the Event List. Each of these items is a separate event that is occuring at some time and place in relation to Oregon State University.

Clicking on a link in this list will open up the Details section of that event, as shown below.

Within the Details you can find information regarding a summary of the event, the name of the location, the address, any costs, and many different types of contact information.

Basic Interface
  Advanced Interface

The Mini-Calendar is a handy tool that allows a user to interact directly with the OSU Events Calendar in several different ways.

There are some slight differences between the Basic Interface (shown at left) and Advanced Interface (shown at right), which will be described throughout this article.

The Mini-Calendar shows the current day with a rectangular orange border around it, as can be seen at both left and right. This rectangle will remain, as a reminder, even while using other elements of the calendar. Selected days, or date ranges, will appear with a gray shading.

If a day on the calendar is underlined, this means that there is at least one event occurring on that particular day. Dates that have no underlines contain no events.

A user can filter events by day, week, or month simply by selecting a region on the calendar.

To filter the OSU events by day using the Mini-Calendar, just left-click on any day within the calendar.

After clicking, the Event List will display only those events that are occuring for the day you selected. Also, the date of the selection will appear as a title at the top of the Event List.

Users can easily scroll through individual days, but the methods differ a little bit between the Basic and Advanced Interfaces.

For the Basic Interface, at left, a navigational region just below the mini-calendar will appear showing the previous day and the next day. Left-click on this links to go forward or back.

For the Advanced Interface, at right, the navigation device is located in the upper left region of the screen. Left-clicking on the right arrow will move the user to the next day. Left-clicking on the left arrow will move the user to the previous day.

Date ranges can be filtered by week as well.

To select a week, just left-click the arrows to the left side of the Mini-Calendar that correspond with the week in question. That particular week will shade out in gray and the Event List will display all events occurring for that week.

The date range of the selected week will appear as a title at the top of the Event List.

Lastly, events can be filtered by month.

To toggle the month filter, just left-click at the top of the Mini-Calendar, on the name of the month, as shown both at right and left.

Just as with the other filters, the Event List will show all of the events for the month chosen. The results will be broken into a long list of events, separated by headings for each day of the month.

As a word of warning, for extremely large calendars, the month view may not be the best filtering solution as the results list can grow very large.

To scroll, by month just look to the top of the Mini-Calendar. To the left and right of the month name, are arrows. Clicking on the left arrow will move back to the previous month. Clicking on the right arrow will advance to the next month.

Part 05 Views

The following article explains how to access different Views within the OSU Events Calendar utilizing both the Basic and Advanced Interfaces.

Before getting started, a definition of a View is probably in order.

Quite simply, a View is the manner in which information is displayed. In the context of the OSU Events Calendar, we're generally talking in terms of Days, Weeks, and Months.

Note: Left-click on images to view enlarged versions.

View Toggle Tools

The OSU Events Calendar is full of many different ways to view calendar information. A need to change views may arise, depending on the activity of the calendar the user is involved with. The way to change these Views is by using a tool called a View Toggle.

Let's start off at the beginning, for both Interfaces, the Basic (at left) and Advanced (at right).

For the Basic Interface, the View Toggle consists of the word links: Today, This Week, and This Month, which are located to the left of the screen beneath the Mini-Calendar.

For the Advanced Interface, the View Toggle contains icons located at the upper right hand side of the screen slightly above and to the left of the Mini-Calendar.

In all views, information regarding any event can be found by left-clicking on the event title to open the Event Detail.

Day View

By default, when visiting the OSU Events Calendar, if the user is not logged into ONID, the default View will be the Today View, using the Basic Interface, as shown at left. Left-clicking on Today will also return to the user to the Day View.

The Advanced Interface shows something quite different, though. Within this interface, the Day View is shown as a block layout, with the duration of the events represented graphically. This View is best used for personal calendars or for calendars which do not have a large quantity of simultaneous events occurring.

osu-events-calendar-views-advanced-interface-event-list-iconAt any point while using the Advanced Interface, to return to a list View, just left click the Event List icon, shown at the immediate right. This will return the user to the Event List View, where events are displayed in a sequential list.

Week View

In the Basic Interface, the user can select a Week View simply by clicking on the This Week link, in the View Toggle, which is beneath the Mini-Calendar. This will filter out the events only for that chosen week.

In the Advanced Interface, the Weekly View can be displayed by left-clicking on the Week icon. This view is a grid, much like the previous Day View, except the grid displays 7 days, side-by-side, with only event titles and starting times. No event duration and no Mini-Calendar appear in this view .

Month View

In the Basic Interface, the user can select a Month View by left-clicking on the This Month link, located in the View Toggle, beneath the Mini-Calendar. When the Month View is selected, all events for that month will be filtered in the customary, sequential Event List.

In the Advanced Interface, the Month View can be displayed by left-clicking on the Month icon, as shown at right. This view is laid out much like a wall calendar, with a grid of 7 columns and 4 to 6 rows, depending on the length of the month. This particular view can get very large on active calendars.

Views and Navigation

Note the changes that occur in the components of both the Basic and Advanced Interfaces. As different views are toggled, different displays occur on both the Mini-Calendar, as well as in the navigation tools.

In the Advanced Interface, there is also the option to Search this calendar only. On the main OSU Events Calendar, this feature does not work. The main OSU Events Calendar viewed at http://calendar.oregonstate.edu is actually a compilation of many different sub-calendars. These sub-calendars are known as Layers. Each of these Layers can be turned on or off, as needed, to view specific events on particular sub-calendars.

Note: Left-click on images to view enlarged versions.

In the Basic Interface, shown at left, the Layers feature is titled "Show Events" and consists of a simple list of sub-calendars.

In the Advanced Interface, shown at right, the Layers feature is titled "Layered Calendars" and consists of a color-coded list of sub-calendars which match their related events displayed in the Event List.
