Why can't I upload large files into my file browser?

OSU Drupal 6 has an 8MB upload limit for files that are to be uploaded through the User Interface (UI) into the File browser.

Central Web Services would like to remind users that, while we try to not impose storage limits, we do encourage users to be good stewards of University resources.  If your file can be compressed, or otherwise optimized, please do so.  Additionally, remember that if your file is an image or video file and is to be rendered on a page in your website, the larger the file is, the longer it will take for your file to load.

To upload files that are in excess of 8MB, the user will need to use a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) client such as SSH Secure Shell, WinSCP, FileZilla (configured for SFTP), or Fetch (for Mac users).  Instructions for different clients vary, please refer to the software distributor's instructions for the version you are using or contact the OSU Computer Helpdesk for help regarding the installation and use of a specific SFTP client.

Once an SFTP client is available on your desktop or laptop, you will need the following:

  • Directory permission in WebManage.
    • If you do not know whether you have directory access or not, submit a help ticket to CWS at http://oregonstate.edu/cws/contact and request the information.
    • If you are not listed as a Gatekeeper or Author in WebManage, you must receive permission from a listed site Gatekeeper before you can be provided permission to the file directory.  CWS can provide names of Gatekeepers but it is the user's responsibility to contact the Gatekeeper and request access.
  • The connection information to connect your computer to the Central Web Services servers.
