How do I upload files into Drupal?

There are actually two different ways a user can upload files into an OSU Drupal site:

  • Via My Account
  • Via any linking tool used in the TinyMCE text editor

Upload Files Via My Account - Using Navigation Menu

Each Drupal site member has his/her own account through which files can be uploaded into the file browser.  To do this, just follow the steps below:

  1. Within your Navigation menu, click on the My account link.
  2. Click on the File browser tab at the top of the screen.
  3. The file browser will then appear.
  4. In the left pane of the dialog box, select the folder you wish to upload something into.
  5. Click on the Upload tab in the upper left corner of the screen.  A "drawer" will slide open directly under the top tab items.
  6. Click the Browse button next to the file field.  This will open up a dialog box that connects with your local computer.
  7. Locate the item you wish to upload from your computer and select it.
  8. Click the Open button
  9. The dialog box to your computer will close and you will again be in the file browser.
  10. Click the Upload button next to the Browse button and File field.
  11. Your file will appear and should be highlighted in a pale yellow.  If you don't immediately see it, use the scroll bars on the side of the right hand dialog box pane to move the list up and down.

Repeat this process as needed until all desired files are uploaded.

Upload Files Via My Account - Using Admin Menu

The Administration menu, which is the black horizontal menu at the top of your Drupal site, does not have a My Account link.  If you are using the Admin menu and not the Navigation block, do the following to get to the My Account page:

  1. In your URL address bar, type the word profile immediately after your site root.
    1. ex: http://oregonstate.edu/cws/training/profile (training is the site root for this site)
  2. A user list will appear.  Click on your username in the list.
  3. You will be redirected to your My account page.
  4. Click on the File browser tab.
  5. The file browser will then appear.
  6. In the left pane of the dialog box, select the folder you wish to upload something into.
  7. Click on the Upload tab in the upper left corner of the screen.  A "drawer" will slide open directly under the top tab items.
  8. Click the Browse button next to the file field.  This will open up a dialog box that connects with your local computer.
  9. Locate the item you wish to upload from your computer and select it.
  10. Click the Open button
  11. The dialog box to your computer will close and you will again be in the file browser.
  12. Click the Upload button next to the Browse button and File field.
  13. Your file will appear and should be highlighted in a pale yellow.  If you don't immediately see it, use the scroll bars on the side of the right hand dialog box pane to move the list up and down.

Repeat this process as needed until all desired files are uploaded.

Upload Files Via TinyMCE Text Editor

Whenever you embed a file into a Drupal node, what you are actually doing is creating a link to that file.  Sometimes you might make a text link, such as when you want to distribute a PDF file, other times you might want to embed an image.  All of these items still must be linked to a file that resides in your Drupal site's file directory.

There are a couple of different toolbar buttons that will provide linking capabilities for you based on the type of media you're embedding:

  • Insert/Edit Link button (The Chain): this is used to create a text link
  • Insert/Edit Image button (The Tree): this is used to embed images

While all of these buttons are different tools, they all perform the same task - they open a "portal" to the Drupal site's file directory.  For each of these tools, to get into the directory from their respective dialog boxes, just look for the little Browse icon next to the File URL field.

Once you're inside the file browser, just follow the same directions as shown above.
