Wireless network outage (Nov 26 2009)

Service(s) affected: Wireless service for a large part of campus, OSU Extension sites, H.M.S.C. and several smaller locations will be disrupted.

The Aruba wireless LAN controllers will be moved from their existing power source to a new power source. The wireless network will be unavailable, while the change is occurring.

Outage Window:
Start: 11/26/2009 9:00 PM
End: 11/26/2009 10:00 PM

Reason for outage:
Improve power management.

Impact:

Departments affected: Any department housed in the affected buildings.

Locations affected: A large part of campus, OSU Extension sites, H.M.S.C. and several smaller locations.

Applications affected: Anything that uses the wireless network for network connectivity, in the stated locations.

Reason for outage:
To be able to connect array to hosts via fiber

Impact:

Departments affected: n/a

Locations affected: n/a

Applications affected: Most all of these servers or vms are redundant services so there should be no impact on services. With the exception of Saint3 and 4 these are not redundant.

DESCRIPTION: During our next maintenance window we will continue testing
our failover redundancy on the core M120. There is the possibility of
services being interrupted for periods of less than one minute.

In the event of total failure we expect that all customers will revert
to their commodity provider for all traffic.

SUBJECT: UOVPN software upgrade
AFFECTED: Central VPN services (uovpn)
STATUS: Complete with minor issues
START TIME: 11/16/2009 0600
END TIME: 11/16/2009 0630
DESCRIPTION: The client software as well as the OS on the uovpn service
has been upgraded. We have run in to a minor issue where the web
customizations on the various web portals doesn’t seem to be working.
We’re on the phone with Cisco right now trying to see if we’ve run in to
a bug or if something changed between the two versions of code that was
not documented. If we are unable to restore the previous design, we may
downgrade the OS to the previous version.

The issue with the certificate on sds.oregonstate.edu is resolved.

We will be working with the certificate vendor to determine why notifications from them are no longer working.

Immediate brief outage for sds.oregonstate.edu (VPN)

We are trying to resolve an issue with the certificate for the Enterprise VPN (sds.oregonstate.edu). Unfortunately, it is looking like this will require a reboot. Service interruption should be very brief, and will happen momentarily.

We apologize for the interruption. We did not receive a renewal reminder for the certificate from the vendor and the vendor is having issues with their system for issuing certificates.

Wireless network outage (Nov 15 2009)

Service(s) affected: Wireless network service.

Campus will experience a rolling wireless network outage, as a new configuration is pushed to our wireless access points. We do not expect any single wireless access point will experience an outage of more than a few minutes but that outage could occur at any time during the outage window.

Outage Window:
Start: 11/15/2009 1:00 AM
End: 11/15/2009 6:00 AM

Reason for outage:
Multicast traffic, related to mDNS & Link Local Name Resolution has been causing increased switch utilization. A large portion of this traffic originates from the wireless network. Since campus has a DNS server and does not allow wireless clients to connect to each other (for security reasons), this traffic should be unnecessary.

We will be blocking this traffic at the edge of the network.

Impact:

Departments affected: All departments that receive the campus wireless network.

Locations affected: All campus and off-site locations that receive the campus wireless network.

Applications affected: Anything that uses the campus wireless network for connectivity.

alleviate the problem, the DHCP relaying was

SUBJECT: UOVPN software upgrade
AFFECTED: Central VPN services (uovpn)
STATUS: Planned
START TIME: 11/16/2009 0600

DESCRIPTION: During the maintenance window we will be upgrading the OS
and SSL client (AnyConnect) software on the firewall providing campus
VPN services. During this time all sessions will be disconnected and
the service will be unavailable. After this upgrade any new SSL client
connections will automatically download the new software before
establishing a tunnel.

DESCRIPTION: We appear to be having a dhcp server relay problem (the
controllers act as dhcp server relay agents). So, some people may not
be getting dhcp addresses. This appears to primarily affect the WPA
test network.

DESCRIPTION: NTS will be upgrading the firmware on all of the wireless
controllers and access points to the most recent revision.
This should resolve a significant number of bugs. All APs
we have to be rebooted. Downtime will be around 5-10 minutes
per AP.

minute. If the previous failures occur again there is the
potential for service being interrupted for up to 5 minutes.
In the event of total failure we expect that all customers
will revert to their commodity provider for all traffic. We
are trying to determine if a previous failover failure was
caused due to faulty hardware or was just a software issue.
