Example of a Classroom Scan

The observer constructs a chart which represents a seating pattern of the students in the room. When the lesson begins, the observer systematically examines the behavior of each student for a few seconds in order to determine whether the student is “at task.”  The observer and the teacher determine a code to describe the behaviors to be observed.

Possible codes:

W        Writes

T          Talks

O         Observes

D         Dazed

R          Reads

S          Sleeps

C         Looks at clock

The process is repeated several times during the class period.
