Each counseling session varies as it is dependent on the unique needs and strengths of each person involved. Each experience is unique, just as every individual is unique. Counseling is a process that can help you identify more effective strategies to cope with difficult situations and to achieve your goals. While some people seek counseling due to chronic emotional difficulties, many are simply in need of an objective listener or someone to help them see alternatives to their current situation. We are dedicated to helping students by providing brief counseling services; if more intensive or specialized care is needed we can help students find care providers in the community. If you have any questions or would like to make an appointment please call (541) 737-2131. Confidentiality

Individual

Individual counseling provides you with the opportunity to work one-on-one with a counselor. The counselor can assist you in helping to understand yourself and the world around you. Areas that are often addressed in counseling may include support in resolving an issue, recovering from an upsetting experience, exploring thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships with others. Goals for counseling may include relief of symptoms, improved social and academic functioning, and increased insight. Our goal is to provide an open, supportive, and confidential environment for you to address the issues that are concerning you. Please visit the How to Make an Appointment page or call CAPS at 541-737-2131 for more information.

Couples

Couples counseling at CAPS can include you and your roommate, friend, or partner. The aim of couples counseling is to help the parties of a relationship recognize and better deal appropriately with their immediate problems and to learn better ways of relating in general. Couples counseling is useful for couples who are experiencing problems such as repetitive arguments, feelings of distance or emptiness in the relationship, pervasive feelings of anger, resentment and or dissatisfaction, or lack of interest in affection or in a physical relationship with one another. Couples appointments are made in the same way as an Individual appointment. Please visit the How to Make an Appointment page or call CAPS at 541-737-2131 for more information.

Groups

Group therapy provides a safe and confidential place to share and explore your concerns as well as receive support around various issues. Group is a natural extension of the way we live and interact with others and empowers group members to give and receive feedback and support as they experiment with new ways of being. Some groups are population and/or issue specific, while other groups consist of skill building and experiential learning. For more information please visit the CAPS’ Groups web page.

Consultation

We offer private consultations about any personal issue. If you wonder whether you should talk with a counselor or if you are worried about a friend or another OSU student, give us a call. You can talk with a counselor who can help you decide what steps make the most sense given your situation. Please call CAPS at 541-737-2131 for information on how to schedule a consultation.

Outreach

We also conduct workshops and give presentations to classes, student organizations, living groups, and clubs. Our presentations and workshops address a variety of subjects such as stress management, eating disorders, self-esteem, test anxiety, managing your moods, and substance abuse. To request a presentation please use the Presentation Request Form.

The Mind Spa

The Mind Spa at CAPS is a unique sanctuary where you can soothe your mind, body, and spirit. The Mind Spa is open to all OSU community members (faculty, staff, and students) and features the latest in biofeedback technology, meditation resources, light therapy, and robotic massage chair therapy.  To make an appointment, please call CAPS at 541-737-2131.
