Theoretical Orientation

I have twenty plus years experience in clinical social work including three years of an active private practice. I am person centered, strength based and outcome oriented. I believe in people and their ability to work through life challenges. I believe in guiding people to access their full potential. I believe that we are whole but occasionally get into places that need outside perspective to help sort through the rough places. I believe that choosing therapy is a healthy alternative to staying in a place of dis-ease and pain. I believe in change and the power of the brain to help us rewrite our story to fit our current needs and desires. I believe that the heart does not lie to us and the more we can find balance in our lives the more we find contentment. I draw from many theoretical perspectives cognitive behavior, mindfulness, person centered but believe that relationship is where trust grows and change happens.  I believe in creating a trusting therapeutic alliance and use that relationship to help people work through relationship issues outside the office.  I use client feedback and client empowerment as key cornerstones of therapy.  As a social worker I also consider other systems as influences over our functioning i.e.,  family, peers, racism, homophobia, classism, religion, and disfranchisement.

Supervision Style

I work with Interns to create safety and trust to learn through nonjudgmental practice.  I use the experience of self in therapy and the issues of transference and counter transference.  I work to use experience with knowledge, practical application of theoretical ideas.  I believe that learning happens when the intern can feel safe to make mistakes and be human.
