How can self-esteem be improved?

Below are ideas you can use to improve your self-esteem.

  • Learn to identify and accept your strengths and weaknesses. Remember, no one is perfect and you don’t have to be perfect either. Self acceptance is the single most important factor to increase self-esteem.
  • Set realistic goals for yourself, and write down steps to work toward these. Work on them one small step at a time. Be patient, and don’t give up!
  • Learn to trust your own feelings and intuitions.
  • Take time regularly to be alone and enjoy your own company. Hobbies, individual sports, crafts, and reading are examples of ways to be alone.
  • Look for friends with high self-esteem. Let their positive and supportive attitude influence you to be more positive. Avoid people who make you unhappy.
  • Stop comparing yourself to other people. There will always be someone who is “better” at something than you are. Accept that, and focus on your own growth.
  • Do not put yourself down. It is very difficult to raise your self-esteem if you make disparaging comments about yourself.
  • Get involved in work or activities you love. It’s hard to feel good about yourself if your days are spent doing something you despise. If you can’t change work or school, make time for other pleasurable activities or hobbies.
  • Start giving more. Give your time, your smile, do good deeds, give people breaks in traffic, etc. Doing nice things will help you feel good about yourself.
