Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for services at CAPS?

During the academic year, all enrolled OSU students who have paid the health fee are eligible for services at CAPS. In the summer, OSU students who are not enrolled for summer term - but who were enrolled in spring and will be enrolled in fall - may pay the health and counseling fees and receive some services. Enrolled OSU Special Students (those not currently enrolled in a degree program) and students enrolled in the LBCC/OSU Dual Admission and Enrollment Program may receive some services when they have paid the health and counseling fees. You may discuss this with the counselor during your Initial Intake Appointment.

Who will I be meeting with when I come to CAPS?

Counseling Services staff are committed professionals with particular expertise in the concerns of college students. Our staff includes Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers, Professional Counselors, Pre-doctoral Residents completing the final stages of their doctoral training in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, and Master's students in Counselor Education. If you have a preference regarding whom you see, we encourage you to tell the receptionist; in some cases this may increase the length of your wait for an appointment but we will do everything possible to accommodate your request.

How much do the services cost?

Registered students who have paid the health and counseling fees may receive up to five individual sessions, if needed, with no additional charge. If your counseling goes beyond 5 sessions in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30), the additional charge will be $5 per session. There are separate fees charged for testing services that may be conducted in conjunction with your counseling.

Will information from my counseling end up on my academic record?

No. Your sessions with a counselor are confidential. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for you to talk about personal matters.

You can call us at 737-2131 to get information about scheduling an appointment. Also, you can stop by our office on the 5th floor of Snell Hall to complete paperwork and schedule an Initial Intake Appointment. We usually prefer that you complete the paperwork before scheduling that initial appointment.

Does my insurance cover the cost of counseling?

CAPS does not process or submit billing to insurance companies. Many of the services provided at CAPS will not be eligible for insurance coverage. We cannot guarantee that your insurance company will reimburse you for these services. If you have questions, please discuss them with your insurance representative. Services are not covered under the Oregon Health Plan. All charges incurred are your responsibility regardless of whether the services are or are not covered by your
