14th Salmon Ocean Ecology Meeting
March 21-22, 2012 in Newport, Oregon

The Salmon Ocean Ecology Meeting fosters communication and collaboration among researchers working on the ecology of Pacific salmon along the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.

Now in its 14th year, this meeting has historically been an opportunity for sharing information across diverse coastal habitats and a place for presenting “work in progress” and informal speculation. The goal is to encourage interaction among participants and productive exchange of ideas.

We are continuing on with the effort to “Return to the Workshop” started at last year’s Seattle meeting. We seek stimulating presentation on all aspects of salmon ocean ecology and encourage participation in the following sessions.

Forecasting Workshop: We encourage individual presentations that deal with incorporating ocean information in forecasting models and will also continue with the "Forecasting Contest". For the forecasting contest, we aim to compile information prior to the workshop. Please contact moderator Pete Lawson (Peter.W.Lawson@noaa.gov) if you are interested in contributing to the forecasting session.

The Ocean Update: A highlight of past meetings is hearing about ocean conditions throughout the region. What happened in 2011? Provide a brief update (1-2 slides) on ocean conditions in your region for a coordinated “Ocean Update”. Please contact moderator Skip McKinnell (mckinnell@pices.int) if you are interested in contributing to the ocean update.

There will also be a Dedicated Session on “Integrating survival estimates”. Presentations on various approaches to improve and integrate survival estimates for Pacific salmon will be followed by a stimulating discussion! For example, we will have presentations from researchers working on the Comparative Survival Study in the Columbia River on their approaches for integrating ocean variability. If interested in participating, please contact Jessica Miller (Jessica.Miller@oregonstate.edu) or Pete Lawson (Peter.W.Lawson@noaa.gov).
