The Community Service Center

  • Organizes day of service events and ongoing community service projects;
  • Administers Students In Service, an Americorp program for college students that offers educational awards (ranging from $1,000 to $2,300) to students who complete 300, 450, or 900 hours of service in one to two academic years;
  • Sponsors educational sessions about critical community issues; and
  • Provides consultation and information about service opportunities on- and off-campus.

People get involved with service for unique and varied reasons and there are numerous benefits. The experience of getting involved with your communities through service may allow you to:

  • Develop friendships and a stronger sense of community
  • Feel a sense of belonging and accomplishment
  • Deepen your understanding of complex social, environmental, and political issues
  • Challenge you to explore your values and points of view
  • Provide the opportunity for greater self awareness (emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually)
  • Allow you to build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Bring alive course content and provide you with an opportunity to connect what you learn in the classroom (theory) with the rest of the world (practice)
  • Be an outlet for your creativity and initiative
  • Provide you with experiences and opportunities for the development of leadership and technical skills and professional networks and contacts
  • Assist you with career decision making
  • Prepare you for post-graduate work
  • Offer you unique experiences that are attractive to employers and graduate schools; resume building
