Graduate Studies
A graduate student can elect to study Women Studies in the following ways:
1. Primary field of study within the M.A.I.S. degree (Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies). This means specializing in Women Studies and declaring two secondary areas of study that complement the primary field. One of these secondary areas can be Women Studies also. Within Women Studies, our areas of specialization include contemporary women's issues; gender, race, and class; and international women's issues.
2. Secondary field of study within the M.A.I.S. degree. This means specializing in a primary area that is not Women Studies and declaring Women Studies as one or two of the secondary areas of study, or having three equal areas of study.
3. Graduate minor in conjunction with a Master's or Doctoral in another field of study. This means you receive a graduate minor in Women Studies while you are working on a graduate degree in another department.
Core Requirements
1. M.A.I.S. Women Studies Primary Area
Students must complete a minimum of 18 credits which include the following required courses plus thesis or non-thesis credits:
- WS 514 Systems of Oppression in Women's Lives
- WS 516 Theories of Feminism
- WS 580 International Women
- WS 510 Internship 3 - 6 credits
- WS 518 Feminist Research (required for thesis option only)
2. M.A.I.S. Women Studies Secondary Area
Students must complete a minimum of 12 credits which include the following required courses:
- WS 516 Theories of Feminism
- WS 514 Systems of Oppression
- WS 580 International Women
Many students elect Women Studies as both primary and secondary areas. They must complete a minimum of 30 credits in Women Studies of the 45 required for the M.A.I.S. degree, plus thesis and non-thesis credits. The required core courses may be spread across these two areas. See above for area of specialization.
3. Graduate Minor
Students working on the graduate minor in Women Studies must complete 12 credits at the Master's level and 18 credits at the Doctoral level.
