Women Studies

The Certificate in Women Studies is designed to facilitate a broad interdisciplinary study of gender and women's issues. It emphasizes the diversity of women's experiences through a focus on disciplinary based knowledge about women's lives and relationships in the many departments where courses in gender are taught. While core coursework taught by the Women Studies Program is required, student are expected to take the bulk of their elective coursework from approved Women Studies Program classes offered throughout the different departments on campus. A total of 27 credits is required for the Certificate , with at least 12 of these credits at the upper-division level.

Core Requirements (9 credits):

• WS 223 Women: Self and Society
• WS 410 Internship 3 credits minimum
• WS 416 Theories of Feminism OR WS 417 Feminist Philosophies

The remaining 18 credits can be taken from elective courses offered by the Women Studies Program (any course with WS prefix) and from approved Program Courses offered in any department at Oregon State University. However, at least 12 of these 18 credits must consist of the approved Program Course. An approved Program Course is on that has a focus on gender and/or women's issues, are taught in a unit other than the Women Studies Program, and have been approved as fulfilling the requirements of a Women Studies Program Course. No more than 3 credits of WS 402, Independent Study and a total of 6 credits of WS 410, Internship may count toward the Certificate in Women Studies. Program Courses are subject to change based on availability and/or changes of content/focus.
