Course Information

Available Spring Term

In this craft class we’ll explore how form and structure are inextricably wedded to the overall effect of a book.  We’ll read five novels, a short story collection, and a memoir: the multi-phonic A Gathering of Old Men (Gaines) and The Sweet Hereafter (Banks), the first-person omniscient That Night (McDermott), a story within a story in Democracy (Didion), narratives nested and layered across time in Cloud Atlas (Mitchell), the resonant stories of Battleborn (Watkins), and the collage structure of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City (Flynn).  Writing assignments will be both creative and critical.
