English 202 Shakespeare

This course is designed to help students become more confident readers (and audience members) of Shakespearean drama by focusing on language, historical context, and staging. We will also trace overarching themes in the second half of Shakespeare’s career, including metatheater, the power of suggestion, and familial relationships. Plays include Othello, Macbeth, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest. The class will meet for lecture on Mondays and Wednesdays; on Friday, students will break into smaller discussion sections. This course fulfills requirements for the bacc core (Western Culture or Literature and the Arts) and the English major or minor.
