Studies in British Poetry-The Sonnet: In this class we will survey the history of the British sonnet from the sixteenth century to the twentieth, including an extended, careful reading of all of Shakespeare’s sonnets. We’ll become expert readers of poetry, carefully attuned to how language complicates itself through its musical qualities, intertextuality, and structures. There will be three essays in which students analyze sonnets stylistically and thematically, and we will try to write a few sonnets ourselves.
Texts: Shakespeare’s Sonnets (edited by Stephen Booth) Vikram Seth’s The Golden Gate Readings which will be posted on Blackboard
