THE SOCIOLOGY MAJOR
*requirements for students graduating in 2007-2008 or later
A minimum of 48 credits of sociology coursework, to include the following:
- SOC 204 - Introduction to Sociology - 3 credits (prerequisite to all upper division courses)
- SOC 413 - Sociological Theory - 4 credits (prerequisites: SOC 204 and junior standing)
- SOC 415 - Understanding Social Research - 4 credits (prerequisites: SOC 204 and junior standing)
- SOC 416 - Conducting Social Research - 4 credits (prerequisites: SOC 204, SOC 415, and junior standing)
- Sociology Electives - 33 credits (see INTEREST AREAS below)
Additional recommendations and restrictions:
- A GPA of 2.00 must be earned in sociology course work. A grade of C- or better is required in SOC 413, SOC 415, and SOC 416. Upper division coursework cannot be taken S/U.
- A maximum of 8 credits from SOC 406 (projects) and/or SOC 410 (internship) may be applied to the 48 credit minimum.
- A maximum of 12 credits of lower division sociology can be transferred/accepted toward sociology requirements.
- Students may pursue either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. The B.A. emphasizes foreign language study, while the B.S. involves science, computer science, and quantitative studies. See an advisor to discuss the best choice for you.
