Jane Yao is an MAIS student in History and English and has been awarded the Provost's Graduate Distinguished Fellowship for 2012. Jane earned her B.A. at Fudan University in Shanghai, China and began her graduate work in History this Spring. She already has a carefully thought-out research program and plans to work under Hung-Yok Ip.
Her graduate research focuses on Christianity in modern China and how Chinese Christians negotiated their new identity by embracing their nation, adopting a foreign religion, and aspiring to be cosmopolitan. She is also examining how Chinese converts and Western missionaries shaped each other as they worked in tandem to establish a Chinese Christendom.
