Tuesday, January 08, 2013

Welcome to Winter Term!

Welcome back! We hope you had a good break and that your first week of classes is going well!

We are here to assist you in with your academic needs such as registering for courses, scheduling advising appointments, getting your registration PIN, etc.  Our office hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.   The main office is now located in Reed Lodge, 2950 SW Jefferson Way. Please feel free to drop by anytime.

If you would like to schedule an advising appointment, please drop by or call the School of Psychological Science main office at 541-737-2311 to schedule an appointment. All Freshmen are advised in the College of Liberal Arts this year.  All Sophomores are advised by Birken Noesen and Juniors and Seniors are advised by Teri Duever.

Happenings in Psychology:

  • New Psychology Advisor! Please welcome Birken Noesen, a graduate student in the MAIS program, to the advising team in the School of Psychological Science.  Birken will be working with sophomore Psychology majors, & any student wishing to declare a minor in Psychology. He recently graduated from the Psychology program at OSU, and is active in Dr. Lien’s research lab.  His office is located in Reed Lodge, room 202.  Birken is taking the advising load of Dr. Michael Crowley who is away on leave this term.
  • Before the term gets too intense… be sure you fill out the financial aid application for 2013-14 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/  Select “login” for returning user.  Everyone recommends that you fill it out as early  in January as possible.  Since taxes aren’t finished at this point, you can use estimates and make corrections later.  That is expected.
  • This is also a great time for in-State students to check the Oregon Scholarship Application (OSAC) for any scholarships you may be eligible for. https://secure.osac.state.or.us/listScholarships.aspx   The OSAC awards grants and scholarships of more than $118 million to Oregon students for higher education.
  • The School of Psychological Science’s Psychology students currently organize Psi Chi, a chapter of the national honor society in Psychology. Psi Chi will be holding its first meeting of the Term soon.   Membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students with a major or minor in Psychology who have a 3.3 GPA and have completed 14 quarter credit hours of Psychology.  Stay tuned for our upcoming events this term.  If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Lewis, Psi Chi Advisor, at Teri.Lewis@oregonstate.edu.

Here are some things you should remember for Fall Term:

  • Add/Drops:  During the first week of the term you can add and drop courses on-line. Starting Monday, January 14 if you are adding a course you will need to get the Department that is offering the course to do an override for you. For dropping courses you can do this online this week and next week. The deadline for adding/dropping/registering for courses is Friday, January 18.
  • To change to or from S/U Grading: The deadline to change to or from S/U Grading is 5 pm Friday, February 22 – Remember, you cannot S/U any of your major courses and must get a C- or higher to pass the course if you S/U.
  • Martin Luther King Holiday: Monday, January 21
  • Dead Week: March 11-15
  • Finals Week: March 18-22

Success Tips:

  • Have you purchased your textbooks yet?  If textbook cost is an issue for you, check at the library as some instructors put copies of their texts on reserve there for students to access.
  • Go to all your classes. Don’t buy the myth that the first class isn’t important.  Every class is important, especially in the quarter system where we only have ten weeks!
  • At the first class you will receive a syllabus. Review this document carefully and thoroughly.

ü Write in your planner when assignments are due and tests are scheduled (do this for the entire term)

ü Establish a regular reading and study schedule for all of your classes.

ü Learn your Professor and TA’s names and office hours.

  • If you make schedule changes, do so as soon as you can this week so you do not have to make up a lot of missed class time.
