Identification and dissemination of practices and policies to better prepare coastal residents and infrastructure for the negative impacts of coastal natural hazards. My three areas of focus are earthquake and tsunami preparedness, safer coastal development, and beach hazards. Coastal weather, storms, and climate change. My interest in coastal weather and storms grew from my previous role as the Outreach and Education Coordinator for the NOAA Coastal Storms Program. From 2003-2006 this collaboration between NOAA and Oregon Sea Grant connected local users and stakeholders with new maps, models and tools to better predict and prepare for severe coastal weather. As a county-based OSU Extension faculty, I am a local connection to the resources of OSU. I daily engage local residents and officials in learning about how best to prepare for coastal natural hazards. I work with campus faculty to extend relevant research and information into their learning experiences, and identify local partners for collaborative research with campus faculty. This process of collaborative learning leads to more informed citizens and researchers, and to more effective hazards planning and mitigation strategies.
