Department of Philosophy Awards

The Department of Philosophy seeks to recognize outstanding scholarly writing and achievements by students and honor devoted service to the department by students, staff, and faculty through the following annual awards:

The Matchette Award for the Best Undergraduate Essay, which is submitted in a philosophy class by any undergraduate student. The winner receives $100 from the Matchette Foundation and a framed certificate.

The Hundere Award for Best Essay in Religious Studies, which is submitted in a philosophy or religious studies class by any undergraduate student. The winner receives $100 from the Hundere Endowment and a framed certificate.

The Outstanding Philosophy Essay by a Graduate Student, which is submitted in a philosophy class by a graduate student from any discipline. The winner receives $100 and a framed certificate.

The Peter C. List Award for Excellence in the Study of Philosophy is presented to a student who has displayed excellence in the classroom and advanced the goals of the department outside the classroom, such as through participation in the Philosophy Club. The Award honors Peter C. List, former department chair and now emeritus faculty member. The winner receives $100 and a framed certificate.

Philosophy Department Outstanding Service Award may be presented to a student, staff member, instructor, or regular faculty member who has contributed outstanding service to the department during the prior academic year. The recipient receives a gift certificate from the department.

The Ron Clarke Book Award is given in memory of Ron Clarke, long-time faculty member in the department of religious studies, and an influential scholar in the area of human ecology. The award is presented to a philosophy senior who has distinguished themselves in the coureses the department teaches in philosophy and the environment (PHL 440, 443, 499) in both their grades and their course writing.

The award is presented annually at the spring department picnic along with the other student awards. The recipient will receive $100.

The selection committee is made up of the department chair and the Department Student Awards Committee.

The Manuel Pacheco Award for Excellence in the Study of Diversity and Social Justice

The Program for Ethics, Science, and the Environment bestows an annual Ethical Integrity Award as commendation for faculty, staff, and administration who contribute to the ethical consciousness of the campus community.
