"We All Worship Something"

Does religion matter? After all, it has caused such a mess, as demonstrated by the existence of people who seem convinced that murder, or oppression, or discrimination can prove the existence of divine love, or at least favor. Does religion matter? Probably not, in the eyes of people who confuse religious values with religious institutions, or religious inspiration with manipulative power plays.

For all that it has been sullied and mishandled, there is apparently a need we have for it, something that we cannot as human beings do without. "Secularists" nevertheless want some way to mark the important moments of their lives; people who consider themselves above and beyond the need to be part of an organized religious community nevertheless observe deeply religious rituals on the occasion of births and birthdays, weddings, deaths, and all the other meaningful moments of a life. It has been observed by others before me that we are all religiously dedicated to something. So what is it? Monday night football?

Does religion matter? Only if you want a supportive formula for the ethical choices you make. Only if you want a conceptual scaffolding for every move you make, and every thought you entertain. Only if you want a secure footing from which to ask your life's questions.
