"Is the History of Religion Too Important to be Left to the Religious?"
Of course religion matters. And its history matters too. But whereas only the religious can practice religion, the history of religion can be written by anyone, even, maybe especially, those who do not practice it. In this talk I propose to discuss the history of religion and the advantages and weaknesses such an approach entails. I will illustrate my points with examples from historical writings about periods and locales with which I am most familiar, but I do not want to rule out some more remote references or some from the recent historical past.
