Peace Studies Certificate Requirements

The Peace Studies Program is principally an undergraduate, upper division certificate program,
although graduate students may earn a Peace Studies certificate. To earn a certificate, students must already be admitted to a school or college of Oregon State University, and have satisfied, or be in the process of satisfying, the following:

1. General Oregon State University requirements.
2. Specific school or college requirements.
3. Department major requirements.

To earn a Peace Studies Certificate, students must complete a minimum of 30 hours consisting of:

A. 12 hours minimum of core courses, and B. 18 hours minimum of elective courses.

PEACE CORE STUDIES

Core and elective courses may be taken in any order or sequence. Courses fulfilling a student's major requirements will not apply toward the Peace Studies Certificate requirements. Core Requirements consist of 12 hours minimum. Students must take:

PAX 201: Study of Peace (3)* - required course.
And 3 of the following Core Electives (9 credits):

ANTH 380: Cultures in Conflict (3)
COMM 440/540 Theories of Conflict(3)
HST 317: Why War: A Historical Perspective (4)
PHL 344: Pacifism, Just War and Terrorism (4)
PS 205: Introduction to World Politics (4)

(Substitute core courses must be approved by the Peace Studies program director)

ELECTIVE COURSES

Elective requirements consist of at least 18 hours from two separate areas of concentration. Elective courses in a student's major will not apply to the Peace Studies Certificate requirements.

The areas of concentration include lower division, upper division, and graduate level courses from a variety of departments. This course listing is tentative, subject ot approval from contributing departments and the Peace Studies program committee.
