The Philosophy Minor Requirements

The philosophy minor requires course work in two traditional core fields of philosophy, and enables students to choose an area of concentration to provide breadth in their course of study. A student must complete 27 credit hours in philosophy with the following provisions:

  • 12 credits must be from upper division philosophy courses (300 or 400 level);
  • At least 3 of the 12 upper division credits must come from 400 level course work;
  • Students must receive a grade of C- or above in any philosophy course counting toward the minor;
  • With the exception of one elective course, courses graded S/U will not count toward fulfilling the minor requirements
History of Philosophy(One required class from the following):
  • PHL 301: Greek and Roman Philosophy (4 credits)
  • PHL 302: Modern Philosophy thru Hume (4 credits)
  • PHL 303: Kant and 19th century Philosophy (4 credits)
Logic(One required class from the following):
  • PHL 101: Critical Thinking (4 credits)
  • PHL 121: Reasoning and Writing (3 credits)
  • PHL 321: Deductive Logic (4 credits)
  • PHL 325: Scientific Reasoning (4 credits)
  • PHL 421: Mathematic Logic (3 credits)

Area of Concentration

(Select one area of concentration from the following examples; other areas of concentration are possible in consultation with a faculty advisor):

Ethics

  • PHL 205: Ethics (4 credits)
  • PHL 342: Contemporary Ethics (4 credits)
  • 2 other courses in ethics
History of Philosophy
  • PHL 301: Greek and Roman Philosophy (4 credits)
  • PHL 302: Modern Philosophy thru Hume (4 credits)
  • 2 other courses in the history of philosophy
Logic
  • PHL 321: Deductive Logic (4 credits)
  • PHL 421: Mathematic Logic (3 credits)
  • 2 other courses in a logic-related area
Non-Western Philosophy and Religious Ideas
  • PHL 312: Asian Thought (4 credits)
  • PHL 316: Intellectual Issues of Mexico and Mexican Americans (4 credits)
  • 2 other courses in non-western Philosophy and/or Religious Ideas
Philosophy of Art
  • PHL 360: Philosophy and the Arts (4 credits)
  • PHL 461: Art and Morality (3 credits)
  • 2 other courses in the history of philosophy (e.g., PHL 301, 302, 303, 411, 412)
Philosophy and Religion
  • PHL 220: World Views and Values in the Bible (4 credits)
  • PHL 436: Philosophy and Religion (3 credits)
  • 2 other related courses
Philosophy of Science
  • PHL 325: Scientific Reasoning (4 credits)
  • PHL 470: Philosophy of Science (3 credits)
  • 2 other courses in a science-related area

Electives As many courses as needed to complete the total credit requirement of 27 hours.
