Julia Goodwin joined the music faculty as an adjunct
instructor in 2007. She teaches Piano,
Group Piano, Keyboard Harmony, Music Appreciation, Music History, and Genre
Studies. Goodwin also accompanies both
vocalists and instrumentalists. In
addition, she is an adjunct professor in OSU’s History Department. She holds a B.Mus. in piano performance from
Oberlin College, an M.A. in history from the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte, and a Ph.D. in modern European history from the University of Rochester.
An active performer, Goodwin has most recently given recitals in Wellington, New Zealand, and appeared as a member of the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra. She
has taught piano professionally for more than twenty years, serving on the faculty
of Rochester, New York’s highly respected Hochstein School of Music before
taking up her post at OSU. She has
also taught at the Eastman School of Music, the University of Rochester, the
Rochester Institute of Technology, the State University of New York at Buffalo,
and Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where she has offered courses in Western
Civilization, Europe and the Two World Wars, National Identity, German history,
Eastern European history, Russian history, and college-level writing. During her first year at OSU, Goodwin developed
and taught a unique course called “Music and Social Responsibility,” which she
designed to aid students in exploring their own relationship to music and its
broader application to society.
