I’m originally from Colorado, a place I still hold dear. After graduating with an undergraduate degree in Poetry, I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in a remote, rural community of El Salvador where access to potable water was limited. I stayed in El Salvador as the director of a small non-profit organization working with rural women and health, and later worked with the Peace Corps to train incoming volunteers and pair them with their eventual communities. I left El Salvador after 6 years, with a profound interest in how developing communities allocate scarce water and other natural resources essential to subsistence. I chose Oregon State after visits to several grad schools, and I didn’t understand at the time what made me feel so immediately at home here. I know now that what I originally sensed from OSU was a thoroughness of perspective, a genuine appreciation for and practice of interdisciplinary approaches to questions, a socially and environmentally conscious community, an outspoken regard for the fullness of life, and a group of students and teachers who are self-motivated, foreword-thinking, and adamant that participating in the outdoors is essential to our understanding of the world. Upon completion of my Master’s degree, I hope to return to work in the international non-profit field, helping communities to establish conscientious dialogue and effective policies regarding shared water supplies.
