The academic discipline of mediated communications has been
recognized for over 100 years. The study of mediated communications
has been given many names in many places throughout the world.
Programs, departments, and colleges with monikers such as
Journalism, mass Communications, Mass Media, media Studies all
study mediated communications of one form or another. Oregon
State's program of mediated communications will be called New Media
Communications (NMC).
New Media Communications like mediated communications means many
things to many people. NMC at Oregon State University focuses on
mediated storytelling and the new media technology that makes it
possible. This focus within the broader discipline of mediated
communications capitalizes on the historic strengths of Oregon
State University in the applied sciences. This focus to New Media
Communications takes an innovative approach to the study of
mediated communications covered by all of the types of media
programs listed above. New media Communications is devoted to the
study of mediated communications and its impact on culture,
technology and society.
Courses in New Media Communications are designed to prepare
students for a variety of careers in media and allied fields in
which knowledge of and skills in mediated activity. NMC offers
students the opportunity to pursue a range of theoretical and
practical courses in media. Broad students attain the background
necessary for serving in leadership roles in mediated
communications.
In the contemporary communications and information age,
universities throughout the world have determined that the study of
media is an essential part of their curricula. In the PAC 10, the
discipline of mediated communications is presented as an for the
students at 9 of the 10 universities. Only Oregon State University
does not have a department for the study of mediated
communications. Six of the PAC 10's universities have schools or
colleges of media communications.
