Paul Kopperman teaches two Baccalaureate Core courses, HST 317 (“Why War? A Historical Perspective”) and HST 425 (“The Holocaust in Its History”). He likewise teaches English history (HST 433-434), military history (HST 315-316), and Western Civilization (HST 101, 102). HST 425 is also available online, through E-campus, and during summer term 2010 Kopperman will introduce a new online course, HST 426, “Teaching the Holocaust.”

Background

  • Kopperman's research interests, reflected in the publications entry below, include: Tudor-Stuart history (mainly constitutional, social, colonial); Hanoverian Britain (mainly medical and military; military with focus on the British Army in North America, 1755-83); and the Holocaust within the context of the history of Anti-Semitism.
  • Before entering the University of Illinois (Ph.D., 1972), Kopperman studied at Queens College, New York (B.A., 1966; M.A., 1969). A member of faculty at Oregon State since September 1978, he had previously taught at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia) and at Illinois.

  • Braddock at the Monongahela (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1977; 3rd printing, 2004).
  • Sir Robert Heath, 1575-1649: Window on an Age (Woodbridge, Suffolk: Royal Historical Society, 1989).
  • Kopperman's booklets, Ashes and Smoke: The Holocaust in Its History and The Holocaust: What It Was - Why It Was - Why It Is Remembered, were published in 2003 by the Anti-Defamation League. He has also published more than twenty articles, essays, and papers, most of them focused on some aspect of the 18th-century British Army or on medical history.
  • Kopperman is currently working on a book on the medical history of the British Army in North America and the West Indies, 1755-83.
