Gary Ferngren's research interests focus on the social history of ancient medicine, religion and ancient medicine, and the historical relationship of science to religion.
Background
- Ferngren's publications include The History of Science and Religion in the Western Tradition: An Encyclopedia (New York: Garland, 2000), of which Ferngren is General Editor; From Athens to Jerusalem: Medicine in Hellenized Jewish Lore and Early Christian Literature (Rotterdam: Erasmus, 2000), of which he is co-editor; and Science and Religion: A Historical Introduction (Baltimore and London: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002) of which he is editor. He is currently writing a book on medicine and health-care in early Christianity.
- He completed his undergraduate studies at Western Washington University (1964). He received his M.A. (1967) and Ph.D. (1973) degrees from the University of British Columbia. He has taught Greek and Roman history at Oregon State since 1970 and teaches regularly in the University Honors College.
- Ferngren has received several awards for teaching, including the University's highest teaching prize, the Elizabeth Ritchie Award for Outstanding Teaching. Active in several national and international organisations, he has been a Vice President of the International Society of the History of Medicine, of which he currently serves as Associate General Secretary.
