Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of English at Oregon State University. We are dedicated to developing student skills and creating new knowledge in communication, literary analysis, and critical thinking: literacy in its broadest sense. The department offers instruction in literature, writing, and criticism to students in all disciplines who seek the broadening influence of humanistic studies and who wish to become better readers and writers. Courses are offered in British and American Literature, Composition and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, Critical Theory, Film Studies, Environmental Literature, Cultural Studies, Studies in Gender and Literature, Literatures of the World, and Global/Multicultural Literatures. Studying works of literature deepens our understanding of historical, cultural, and literary forces that help to shape the global community. Instruction in English teaches students how to analyze, conduct research, read carefully, and communicate with style and power, skills that enrich daily life and apply to every career that students pursue. The faculty consists of dedicated teachers and scholars who are vitally involved in international scholarly activities and exchanges. Numerous faculty members have been honored with regional, national, and international awards for their teaching and research. Our graduates have an outstanding record of professional success. I urge you to follow the link to "The English Letter" (PDF) for details of the latest accomplishments of our students, faculty, and alumni-and we thank you for your interest in our programs.
