CLA Awards 2006

David Robinson

David Robinson, Professor of English, received the CLA Advisory Council Excellence Award. The Excellence Award recognizes demonstrated and continuing excellence in research and scholarship, teaching, and service to the academic community. Professor Robinson's numerous accomplishments include the endowed position of Oregon Professor of English in 1991, Distinguished Professor Award (1994), and a Master Teacher designation (1997-98). Professor Robinson also established and directs OSU's American Studies Program, which meshes several aspects of historical and literary study. Professor Robinson's colleagues praise his conscientious dedication to his position, pragmatism, and "constant voice of wisdom."

The CLA Advisory Council Excellence Award is made possible through gifts from the members of the College of Liberal Arts Advisory Council and carries a $10,000.00 award.

Janet Lee

Janet Lee, Professor of Women Studies, was presented the Thomas R. Meehan Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to undergraduate teaching in the College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Lee's colleagues praise her enthusiastic attitude and ability to engage students in provocative debate and discussion regarding issues affecting not only women, but our society as a whole. Dr. Lee's interpretation of the baccalaureate core course WS 223: Women, Self & Society has earned her praise as, "a professor who skillfully facilitates discussion . . . and who is available for her students outside the classroom for meaningful conversation . . . and personal encouragement." Dr. Lee was involved in the initial development of OSU's Difference, Power, and Discrimination program, has authored several books covering feminism and women's achievements, and has given numerous presentations on teaching.

The Award honors Thomas R. Meehan, College faculty member from 1962 to 1984, who won more campus-wide teaching awards during his years with the College of Liberal Arts than any other faculty member.  It carries a $1,000.00 award.

Marjorie Sandor

Marjorie Sandor, Associate Professor of English, was presented the Robert J. Frank Research, Scholarship and Creativity Award. This award helps raise the visibility of College scholars and creative artists, honors exceptionally productive individual researchers, and challenges others to engage in research and creative endeavors. Professor Sandor's colleagues laud her talents as not only a fine fiction writer and essayist, but also her "unstinting generosity as a mentor." Professor Sandor nurtures and cultivates her students' individual talents while mentoring them professionally. Her steadfast dedication to her job is matched only by her humble demeanor and uncanny ability to provoke thought and emotion in her readers. Her three books, A Night of Music, The Night Gardener, and Portrait of My Mother Who Posed Nude in Wartime, have garnered various honors, including the Oregon Book Award and the National Jewish Book Award in Fiction. Professor Sandor is also the only writer to be invited to the prestigious Avron Writers' Workshops in the United Kingdom three consecutive times.

The Robert J. Frank Research, Scholarship and Creativity Award is made possible through the generosity of Robert Frank and carries a $500.00 award.

Robert Schwartz

Robert Schwartz, Professor of English, was presented the C. Warren Hovland Service Award, which recognizes outstanding recent and accumulated service to the College, University, and community. Professor Schwartz was described by colleagues as a man who tenaciously and passionately commits himself to his colleagues and students. As Chair of the English Department, Professor Schwartz personally funded the now-annual essay contest that gives undergraduates in English classes the opportunity to flex their creative muscles and develop their prowess as future writers. He helped establish the English Students Association, which has since generated a strong sense of community and togetherness for English majors. Professor Schwartz has previously received the CLA Thomas R. Meehan Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990, which recognized his unparalleled contributions to excellence in undergraduate teaching.

The C. Warren Hovland Service Award honors C. Warren Hovland, College faculty member from 1949 to 1986, for his many contributions to the growth and vitality of the College of Liberal Arts and carries an award of $500.00.

Loren Davis

Loren Davis, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, was presented with the Bill Wilkins Faculty Development Award. This award is granted to a College faculty member to enhance teaching skills, improve curriculum, advance research opportunities, or take advantage of career development opportunities. In their nomination letters, Professor Davis' colleagues commend his level of dedication to research on prehistoric North America, which has earned him grants from the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Oregon Sea Grant. This funding has allowed Professor Davis to not only further his research projects, but has contributed to the Anthropology Department's annual Archaeological Field School in Idaho. Professor Davis is also a prolific published writer, having produced 19 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, along with several others under review.

The Bill Wilkins Faculty Development Award is made possible by the Dean Emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts, Bill Wilkins, and carries a $1,250.00 stipend.

Sharyn Clough

Sharyn Clough, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, was presented with the ÉCLAT Faculty Development Award. This award recognizes outstanding performance in professional development and honors faculty members with definite plans for professional development in enhancing teaching skills, improving curriculum, advancing research opportunities, or taking advantage of career development opportunities. Professor Clough's colleagues tout her outstanding dedication to improving students' writing, her participation in developing a more rigorous philosophy major, and her exceptional research and authorial accomplishments. Professor Clough's book Beyond Epistemology: A Pragmatist Approach to Feminist Science Studies has been the subject of conferences both nationally and abroad. She is also the winner of an L.L. Stewart Faculty Development Award, which will be allocated toward the re-working of PHL 436: Philosophy and Religion.

The ÉCLAT Faculty Development Award is made possible by donations from the CLA Emeritus Faculty and carries a $500.00 stipend.

Brad Dennis

Brad Dennis, Chief Business Officer in the College of Liberal Arts, received the Carolyn Maresh Professional Staff Award, which recognizes outstanding job performance and dedication to the College. Mr. Dennis is described by colleagues as a diligent and committed professional whose business prowess is matched only by his willingness to help department chairs, program directors, and their staffs learn more efficient ways to utilize and extract data. Mr. Dennis is an active learner and frequently attends conferences where he acquires new skills to apply to his job. He is a vocal advocate for the work done within CLA and remains fiercely dedicated to keeping the College's fiscal concerns on the university's agenda.

The award honors Carolyn Maresh, longtime Assistant to the Dean of CLA for Business Affairs and carries an award of $500.00.

 

 

Master Teachers

 

The College of Liberal Arts recognized outstanding performance in teaching, scholarly activity and service by 4 faculty members during the 2005-06 academic year. This recognition is given to tenured faculty as a result of the Post-tenure Review process recently instituted by the University. Those recognized for outstanding performance for the 2005-06 academic year are:

Master Teachers

 

The College of Liberal Arts also acknowledged the College of Liberal Arts Master Teachers. This cohort represents the College's most outstanding and experienced professors who teach the freshman discovery courses, in which groups of 20 freshman students take courses linked together by content throughout the first year.
