Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service- Didn’t
Get Registered?
The
registration forms for our MLK Day of Service projects are closed. If you're interested in volunteering and didn’t get
registered, please still plan to show up Saturday morning at 9am at McAlexander
Fieldhouse. We will have last minute cancellations and no shows and would love
to fill those spots with walk-ins! Please bring gear for the rain, such as rain
jackets, shoes, pants, etc. in order to be prepared for outdoor projects.
Thanks for the great response from the OSU community! We'll be looking to
expand and increase the number of projects next year!!!

Description: Fall was a busy term here at College Forests.
Winter will prove to be the same. We will be having several upcoming volunteer
events:
OSU College
Forests will provide water, snacks, gloves and all tools and supplies.
Requirements: All participants will be required to sign a
liability waiver (one per calendar year), and bring closed-toed shoes, long
pants, a shirt, gear suited for weather (rain jacket), long sleeves (for
blackberry and poison oak), and a water bottle.

Junior Achievement Volunteers
When: February 8th, 7:15 am
Where: Weatherford Hall
Description: Spend a day teaching financial literacy to youth in
a Title I school. Volunteers will be paired with a community figure to teach
together. Meet at Weatherford at 7:15am on February 8th for breakfast and
transportation to the school. All materials will be given to volunteers several
days in advance allowing for ample preparation time. Expand your communication,
public speaking, organization, and skills with you while giving back to the

Girls on the Run Coaches
When: March 11-June 4th (Not during Spring Break)
Where: Corvallis area
Description: There are two coaching opportunities, each with
different duties:
Head
Coach: Head coaches are in charge of facilitating practices and teaching the
curriculum.
Assistant Coach: Assistant coaches support the head coach by helping with the
lessons and keeping the girls on track.
Not enough time to be a coach, check out our Practice Partners!
Practice Partner: Volunteer position for individuals interested in
providing support for Girls on the Run participants during the
10-week season and at the 5K celebration. Practice partners provide
enthusiasm, encouragement and support to the girls throughout the program, at
the practice 5k and at the Girls on the Run 5k race. No training needed.

Produce for the People Work Parties

Description: Produce for the People is a collaborative,
volunteer-lead garden with a focus on growing produce for ourselves and
donating to low-income people. We are inviting you to attend two upcoming work
parties at our community garden. We will be spreading leaves, and doing other
small projects to ready our garden for spring planting. Please bring shovels,
wheelbarrows, and gloves, if you have them, although we have some to share.

Emergency Response Team Program

Where: Police Conference Room in the Law Enforcement Building

Description: The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program
educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their
areas and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety,
light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members
can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when
professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members
also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more
active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. The deadline
to register for classes is Feb. 1st, 2013

Students Today Leaders Forever- Pay It Forward Tour
When: March 22nd,
2013- March 30th, 2013
Where: Departure: Corvalis, OR
City 1: Eureka, CA
City 2: Santa Rosa, CA
City 3: San Jose, CA
City 4: Arroyo Grande, CA
City 5: Carson, CA
Destination: San Diego, CA
Description: All STLF College Pay It Forward Tours travel to six
cities across the country over the course of nine days. We will carry out
a service project in each of those communities visited, work with a variety of
organizations and social issues over the course of the week. Through
evening activities and reflection, the Tour is an opportunity to build
meaningful relationships and learn about issues affecting communities across
the country and your own. Each Pay It Forward Tour consists of up to 40
students, is entirely student-led, and is open to all college students
regardless of where they go to school.
The cost of the Oregon State Pay It Forward Tour is $450. That amount
covers all travel, lodging, two t-shirts, 1 or 2 meals per day, and more.
This includes a $125 nonrefundable down payment upon registration, with
the remainder due prior to Tour departure. Be sure to register soon!
If the cost of the trip would be a deterrent to your attendance, please
consider applying for financial aid at aid.stlfosu.org
or contacting us to set up a payment plan. Our funds are limited and need-based
so please request the minimum amount you require. We do not want to prevent any
students from attending purely because of cost.

Linus Pauling Institute’s Healthy Youth Program
When: Winter Term
Where: Linus Pauling Building
Description: The Linus Pauling Institute’s Healthy Youth Program
offers youth cooking classes each term, and they need your help! They are
looking for students who like to cook, enjoy working with children, and are
interested in nutrition education. Each week, volunteers lead a small group of
student chefs, ages 6-12, through recipe exploration. Volunteers teach cooking
basics and engage students in discussions about healthy eating while guiding
them through food preparation.
The volunteer commitment is 3 hours per week for each class, with additional
opportunities including recipe development, program planning, and other
outreach efforts.

Description: Corvallis has a sister city in Gondar, Ethiopia,
where C-GSCA builds wells and works in a school that serves 2,000 students.
Volunteers are needed to help in preparing and cooking foods (under
supervision), set-up of hall with tables, chairs, serving of food trays to
participants, and/or clean-up for a fudnraising event.
Requirements: Ability to work at a steady pace to meet deadlines;

Recycling’s Repair Fair Volunteer

Description: The OSU
Waste Watchers needs volunteers with repair skills - computers,
electronics, furniture, general household items, clothing, anything! We are
hosting monthly Repair Fairs, workshops at which students and community members
bring broken items and learn how to fix them.

Corvallis
Indoor Winter Market SNAP Program
When: The Corvallis
Indoor Winter Market is open 9am to 1pm every Saturday from January 12th until
April 13
Where: Guerber Hall at
the Benton County Fairgrounds, 110 SW 53rd Street
Description: Students can
now use SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) to buy fresh local food
at the Corvallis Indoor Winter Market. All SNAP recipients can use their Oregon
Trail card at the indoor farmers’ market to purchase fruits and vegetables,
plant starts, meat, dairy, and bread. Through Ten Rivers Food Web’s That’s My
Farmer SNAP Incentive Program, students who spend at least $6 of their SNAP
benefits at the market will receive an extra
$6
in market tokens that are redeemable for fresh foods. The same program operates
at the outdoor Corvallis and Albany markets. However, the tokens are not
interchangeable.
Zia

Work
Unlimited Supported Living Program
Description: I am looking for
interns and volunteers for our Work Unlimited Supported Living program
(formerly COI’s Permanent Supportive Housing program). The program provides
case management services to individuals in our community who have special
needs, 90% or more of whom are residents of the Benton Plaza, the Julian Hotel,
or other low-income housing facilities, have a severe/chronic mental illness or
other disabling condition.
The
purpose of our program is to assist clients in managing their illnesses or
disabling conditions so they may continue to live independently and not fall
into homelessness, addiction, or crime and thereby require more costly social
services
In
the past, OSU interns and volunteers assisted in developing plans and programs
in the following five areas: the importance of a balanced diet: regular
physical exercise; increasing participation in activities; reducing intake of
non-prescribed drugs & alcohol; and developing social support networks. The
internship is located at the Benton Plaza (408 SW Monroe).

Description: Financial
Stewardship Resources will be hosting a training for nonprofit board members at
OSU on January 19th. This training is open to anyone interested in working with
nonprofits. We have just opened up our student rate for this event. It will be
offered at $60 for a full day of training (normally $110).
There
will be appx 500 board members from all over the state and instructors from
across the county present, so it is also an excellent networking opportunity
for students.
Items to note:
* Cindy Cumfer and Kay Sohl, authors of the Oregon Nonprofit Handbook, will
each be teaching workshops and have a table during lunch to answer questions
about the book (new edition just came out).
* The Foundation Center will be hosting a workshop.
* Individual trainings for board officers (President, Secretary, Treasurer), as
well as one for new board members.
* Keynote speaker is Melanie Herman from the Nonprofit Risk Management Center -
she will be discussing the Top 10 Legal Risks for Nonprofits.
