Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week will take place November 16-22, 2014. Help us as we create awareness, education, and understanding surrounding issues of hunger, homelessness, food insecurity, and poverty as it affects those in our community and world. The 2013 schedule and event summary can be found below. Be sure to check back soon for 2014 updates!

Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. During this week, a number of schools, communities and cities take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness. This event is nationally sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger & Homelessness.

2013 Event Summary 

OSU's National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week received the "Outstanding Service Project of the Year" for 2014 by the Association of College Unions International. Thank you to our community partners, speakers, panelists, volunteers, and collaborators for making this week an outstanding annual program!

Non-Perishable Food & Toiletry Drive

Co-sponsored by the Center for Civic EngagementHuman Services Resource Center, and OSU Panhellenic Council.

A total of 1,316.4 lbs. of goods were collected during the 2 week donation drive on the OSU campus and in the Corvallis Communtiy 

All donations went to Jackson Street Youth ShelterCommunity Outreach, and the OSU Food Pantry.

Service Projects

 Linn Benton Food Share

18 volutneers contributed a combined total of 45 service hours, repackaging approximately 2,600 lbs. of food at the Holiday Food Drive! Thank you to our volunteers!

 Habitat for Humanity

10 volunteers contributed a combined total of 25 service hours, building 50 feet of fence at the Corvallis build site! Thank you to our volunteers!

TED Talk Hunger Discussion

Ryan McCambridge, Program Manager at Linn Benton Food Share provided a space for our participants to engage in a lively discussion about issue of hunger facing our local, state, and national communtities. Together we reflected on the root causes of food insecurity in our communities and discussed possible solutions for addressing the issue of hunger.

Faces of Homelessness Panel

Local individuals shared personal experiences of homelessness at this event. Space was provided for the personal narrative to dispel myths and stereotypes about people experiencing homelessness. Representatives from Community Outreach, Inc., Jackson Street Youth Shelter, and OSU's Human Services Resource Center provided information about their work and the realities of local homelessness and food insecurity issues. A BIG thank you to our panelist, moderator, and communtiy partners for making this event such a rich experience!

Spinning the Numbers

The Pride Center and HSRC hosted an outreach event that increased awareness about the LGBTQ youth community and homelessness. Over 200 rainbow pinwheels with educational information were distributed at the event. Thank you to our campus partners who made this new event possible!
