Emily Bowling

Hometown: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
What does service mean to you? Emily is a huge supporter of service and community engagement because it requires people to assess and act on their values and envision and work toward creating the community that they want to live in and leave for future generations. Service is about committing to the common good and caring about the well-being and collective experiences of those we share a space and place with -- it's about having a heightened responsibility for one's community.
About Emily: She has worked professionally in higher education and Student Affairs for over six years in the areas of service-learning, civic engagement, residence life, first year programs, and learning communities. Her masters work at Portland State University was in Educational Leadership and Policy with a specialization in Leadership for Sustainability Education. Emily’s professional interests are sustainability education, civic engagement, community-based learning, experiential education, and transformative learning. Emily enjoys helping students to realize their leadership potential in working toward a more just, humane, and sustainable world. Striving to motivate students around issues of social and environmental justice is both hugely rewarding for Emily and one of her primary professional passions. In her spare time, Emily enjoys hiking, cycling, going to concerts, and cooking.

What does service mean to you?I see service as an essential part of education. Sure, we can learn a lot about all of the social injustices currently going on in the world from a textbook, but it's not until you dive head first into the experience that it all starts to become real. Service is an opportunity to stop ignoring what you hear about on the news and take physical responsibility for helping your community thrive.

About Emily: I’m so excited be serving as the 2012-2013 AmeriCorps*VISTA at Oregon State University in the Center for Civic Engagement. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania, went to college in Maryland, and just moved to Oregon in August. I majored in Communications, with a concentration in Public Relations, and I hope to eventually do PR work for a non-profit organization that I’m passionate about. I’ve been involved in service since I was 13 and my love for being involved and encouraging others to make a difference has only grown since. Outside from doing service, I enjoy kayaking, hiking, crocheting, and all things music.

What does service mean to you? Service is the opportunity to become a better citizen and to give back to your community. We live in a society that relies on each of us being independent but I think it's important to work together as communities to overcome the injustices in the world.
About Caity: I'm a 5th year senior who loves to read, write, and cook. I'm very invested in social justice issues and consider my self a feminist. I want to go into the non-profit sector and live in Portland when I graduate!
