Welcome Students and Employers
Oregon State University provides the Student
Employment Manual as the
sole reference for the conduct of student employment. This is an
on-line policy and procedure document meant to support students and
those who wish to employ students part time or temporarily while
they are enrolled at OSU, and includes on-campus, off-campus, work-study,
and internships. Please refer to this manual for guidance, direction,
and resources to assist you.
Student Employment PhilosophyOregon State University believes that students are students first,
employees second. The main reason for being at OSU is the successful
completion of an academic program. Student employment is meant to support
that goal, through caring consideration of the amount of time spent
working, the opportunity to learn skills while working, and provision
of a safe work environment.
OSU encourages positive recognition of our outstanding on-campus student
employees through participation in the Student Employee of the Year
Program, and the National Student Employment Week event.

STUDENT APPRECIATION PROGRAMS
STUDENT EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Western
Association of Student Employment Administrators (WASEA)
conducts a selection process each year to recognize outstanding student
employees in the Western region. This award seeks to recognize the
contributions and achievements of students who work on campus while
attending college. Students are evaluated based on reliability, quality
of work, initiative, professionalism and the uniqueness of their contribution.
To qualify, a student nominee must have completed or will expect to
complete, at least three (3) months full-time or six (6) months part-time
employment during this academic year, June 1 to May 31. The student
employee status applies only to undergraduates and graduate students
who are employed on an hourly basis (not on an assistantship or appointment).
Please complete the nomination form for any student you wish to nominate,
and return the form to Career Services, Student Employment, by 5:00
p.m. on the day of the deadline stated at the top of the form. Nominations
received after this time will not be considered.
After Student Employment receives the completed nomination forms,
a selection committee will determine the OSU winner by using the
WASEA rating forms. After selecting a winner, the committee will
submit the Institutional Selection Report and nomination form to
the OSU WASEA State Liaison by the date specified for the current
year for entry in the state and regional competitions. Click here
to view a timeline of the current SEOTY process.

Committee to Review Nominees for Student Employee of the Year
1. Purpose: The committee will review nominations provided by OSU
employers to determine the OSU Student Employee of the Year, who will
then represent OSU in the State competition, and possibly the regional
and national competition.
2. Committee Composition: The committee will consist of 5 members,
preferably one from each of the following entities:
A. ASOSU
B. OSU Human Resources
C. OSU Financial Aid
D. OSU Academic Department

review and discuss the nominations. The WASEA Rating Form will be used
to evaluate each nominee. A committee member must recuse him/her self
from the rating process for any student employed within their specific
office. Upon a decision of the committee, the nomination form and rating
sheet for the winner will be forwarded to the Student Employment Coordinator,
who will then complete and forward the Institutional Nomination Form
to WASEA for entry in the state level competition.
4. Eligibility: A student must meet all of the following to be considered
for the award:
A. Must meet eligibility requirements and be employed by an OSU college/unit/department

payroll
process is not eligible for nomination.

NATIONAL STUDENT EMPLOYMENT WEEK
The National
Student Employment Association (NSEA) has declared that
the second complete week in April each year be set aside to recognize
the value of student employees. Each year colleges and universities
across the country recognize the importance of the student work experience
during this time. Student employment offers students career-enhancing
opportunities, the ability to develop skills relevant in any career,
and better preparation for the job market upon graduation.
Of course, a primary motivation for most students is the need to help
pay for their education. Many students are able to earn a significant
portion of their college expenses, thus avoiding the debt burden so
common with college graduates today.
Student employees are a vital resource to Oregon State University,
providing the work force that supports a multitude of departmental
functions. Each year, more than 4,500 new students participate in on-campus
employment. The students employed at OSU work more than 1.2 million
hours a year, and earn in excess of $9.8 million dollars. The significant
contributions made by student employees go far beyond hours, dollars,
and cents. Student employees compose much of the workforce that provides
departmental and administrative support services. In addition, student
employees contribute much of the creativity, energy and enthusiasm
that make OSU successful. Students help us look at old conventions
in fresh new ways and give new insight into recurring challenges.
This is your opportunity to recognize outstanding student employees
in your department. Plan an event; give a gift of recognition or certificate
of award to show your appreciation. A list of low cost and free ideas
follows.
You may want to consider recognition for quality of work, initiative,
reliability, professionalism, uniqueness of contribution, significant
improvement in service to the university, imaginative or creative solutions
to difficult department problems, active interest and participation
in departmental affairs, or other evidence of sustained efficiency.
Thank you for your time and effort in recognizing your student employees.
Please contact Mike Mays at 737-0520 if you have additional questions.
IDEAS! Recognition for Student Employees
Low Cost
* Treat Day - full-time staff bring in treats/lunch for student workers.
* Take pictures - post employee pictures and list what wonderful things
they do for your department.
* Coupon Booklets - this is always a hit with students! Insert coupons
for a free can of soda, one dozen home baked goodies, etc. Be creative
in designing your own coupons.
* Buy low cost, blank certificates and make up silly awards for students:
best telephone voice, best web-surfer, etc.
* Friendship Plants - take cuttings from a plant in the office and
give to each student as a live “connection” to the office.
* Bright Ideas - spray paint a light bulb gold, screw into a jar of
play-dough and make a label around the jar naming who is receiving
the “Bright Idea” award.
* Good Egg Award - buy plastic Easter Eggs, fill with goodies and
give out with “Good Egg” certificates. List what the student
did to deserve this award.
No Cost
* Pat on the Back - Draw an outline of your hand on a piece of paper.
Photocopy enough copies for all students in your office. On each hand
write a note that tells the student why they deserve a “Pat on
the Back”.
* Use this week as an opportunity to start an award recognition program.
Look around the office or at home for a white elephant item. Name the
item for the award (Employee of the Month/Week, Great Idea Award, Gotcha
Award - catch someone in the act of doing something good) and then
make the first presentation of it during Student Employment Week.
* Make a banner to hang for the whole week in your office.
* Decorate an office bulletin board or the office door for the week
in recognition of your students.
