Jenny Rhodes
My Role at OSU:
As a Graduate Assistant in Career Services, my role is to assist students in making career decisions by giving them access to necessary tools and resources.
My Career Path:
I graduated from the University of Evansville in Indiana with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. While in school I spent a semester living and learning in England which ignited a passion for travel and other cultures. Following graduation, I began an internship with General Motors which took me to 38 major cities in the US teaching dealerships how to utilize the internet in their business models. When the internship ended I moved to Dublin Ireland where I worked in a pub and a café for 6 months. Back in the US I drifted back toward the auto industry and for three years worked again for GM and then for Autobytel. While challenging and rewarding these jobs didn’t satisfy my creative leanings, my desire to contribute to the world and my passions for international experience so I enrolled at OSU in the College Student Service Administration program. Now with Career Services and hopefully someday in a Study Abroad or an International Education Office I will be able to help students discover their own passions.
The Rewards in Doing what I do:
The main reward I get is the satisfaction I feel when I know I have helped a student explore possibilities and discover something new about him/herself. Another reward is feeling relevant and useful and challenged to be my best because you never know when you might inspire someone or change a student’s life.
My Words of Wisdom to Students:
Go into your college experience with eyes wide open. Try new things and explore but also be deliberate and intentional. Know your strengths and weaknesses and then seek out opportunities to improve or put your talents and skills to work.
