Adry Clark
My Role at OSU:
Career Counselor and Internship Coordinator
My Career Path:
I have had a very round-about career path, which is one of the reasons I’m passionate about career counseling. After studying philosophy in the University of Iceland for two years, I decided to do something “practical” with my life and get a degree in Hospitality Management. I went to California, graduated with said degree and a minor in Business Administration, and embarked on a very unsatisfying career . . . for me . . . that ended after one year. What followed were a few years of trying to figure out my purpose in life. I partnered with a professional designer and started a desktop publishing/graphic design company that I ran for 7 years. I had an aha moment when I read an article about a career counselor in the LA Times. I set out to find out everything I could about the profession, did informational interviews, volunteered as a resume writer with a charity organization, and got a job in marketing for an organization providing career counseling. After all my reality checking (I did not want to make another “mistake”) I realized I love the field. I got my master’s degree in career counseling and have worked in higher education, non-profit organizations, and private practice for the past 6 years.
The Rewards in Doing what I do:
I love to work with such intelligent and capable students and to help provide support and resources to help them create a rewarding life for themselves. And I get to put everything I’ve learned into practice.
My Words of Wisdom to Students:
It’s very important to find your “best work”, but you never know where you’ll find out. So be proactive, explore, make connections, try things on, reality test, and utilize all the resources available to you.
