Oregon State uses Drupal for our content management system (CMS). Drupal is a free, open source CMS, and the global Drupal community is hosted right here in our internationally recognized Open Source Lab.
Drupal themes ("theme" is another word for "template") are free for use by Oregon State departments, programs, offices or divisions. They were created with flexibility in mind, and you can select from a number of customization options to adapt the visual style to your site. Did we mention that they're free? Using these themes allows you to jump right into content development, devoting your time, energy and budget to what's most important in any Web project.
Custom-developed variations of these themes are only available to colleges at this time.
The current themes and sample sites and their appropriate uses are as follows:
- Confident - any academic or administrative units (example site)
- Standard (Drupal 6) - Oregon State top tier and any academic or administrative unit (example site)
- Standard (Drupal 7) - any academic or administrative unit (example site)
- Doug Fir (Drupal 7) - any academic or administrative unit (these brand guidelines use Standard 7)
- Standard VSO - Variation of Standard theme for use only by voluntary student organizations (example site)
These templates are currently only available to Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 users. If you need to request a Drupal site, contact Central Web Services to start the process. Users new to Drupal will benefit from taking introductory classes on this CMS.
The Doug Fir theme features an updated and refreshed variation of our standard Web look. Our go-to theme in Drupal 7, Doug Fir features a more open design and has built-in responsive capabilities to allow it to adapt to tablets and mobile devices. Named after Oregon's state tree, this is the first in a line of variations that will celebrate the Beaver State's woody wonders.
Oregon State University Standard
This theme is available to any academic or central programs, departments or units. It features right-hand and horizontal navigation, and it closely follows the Oregon State University home page and top-tier pages. Features include a rotating feature story option for the home page, and a sidebar highlights option similar to the Featured Sites area on the university home page.
This theme is for use only by voluntary student organizations (VSOs). Sponsored student organizations should either use their sponsoring department's website or a separate Drupal site with either the Confident or Standard theme with settings to match their sponsoring department.
The Standard VSO site features all of the functionality of the Standard theme, but does not include the Orange OSU tag at the top.
