New Advisor Retreats

The Office of Academic Success and Engagement and College Head Advisors offer new academic advisors opportunities to connect with other new advisors and learn more about the advising culture at Oregon State University.  The fall term sessions* (October) serve as an introduction to OSU academic advising and related resources while the winter term session (January) focuses on specific issues or processes incorporated in the work of academic advising at OSU.

At each retreat, participants discuss potential advising scenarios and how to navigate conversations with students in academic duress.  Additionally, participants learn about academic and student support services from units with whom they may collaborate to provide holistic advising to students.

*driven by hiring numbers and interest, the October sessions are sometimes repeated in spring term

Advisor Coffee Talks

The OSU Advisor Coffee Talks are an informal gathering of advisors, both professional and faculty, that foster support, networking and professional development opportunities. Volunteer coordinators work to facilitate productive conversations between advisors and other student service units on campus by helping identify topics of interest, scheduling and planning events, collecting and archiving presentation materials, and collaborating with the Office of Academic Success and Engagement to meet the advising goals of the university.

Advisors receive information about scheduled Coffee Talk events via the Inform-C10 (Academic Advisors) listserv. If you are not on the Inform-C10 listserv and believe you should be, please subscribe at http://lists.oregonstate.edu/mailman/listinfo/inform-c10.

The talks are open to anyone interested in attending. On campus programs with an advising component, or that may be of interest to the advising community, are encouraged to express interest in presenting at a talk.

Information presented at each Coffee Talk is posted to the OSU Advisor Coffee Talk blog as a resource for those who were not able to attend, or as a resource for future reference - http://blogs.oregonstate.edu/advisorcoffeetalk/. We encourage you to engage with your advising peers by commenting on posts. If you would like to start a blog post unrelated to the Coffee Talks, but relevant to advisors, please contact one of the coordinators.
